How to Wax a Surfboard
Treating your bodyboard right will improve its performance while surfing and make it last longer, while wax on your surfboard would be essential. Without wax, a surfer would just slip off the board. Here are some steps you may follow when you apply wax on your surfboard.
1.Make sure the board is clean and free of damage, dirt, sand or dust. Cleaning the board with denatured alcohol or acetone will help.
2.Start with a hard wax such as paraffin or "tropical" wax to provide a base coat.
3.Apply a thin coat of the hard wax on the deck of the board by using a straight motion across the board from side to side. Longboards should be covered from nose to tail. Shortboards should be covered in the lower 2/3 of the board.
4.Choose a softer surfboard wax for the second coat. These waxes are sold in surf shops under the designation of "cool" or "cold" water waxes.
5.Longboards should be covered from nose to tail with the softer wax using a gentle circular motion. Lumps of wax should form on the deck of the board.
6.Shortboards should be covered on the deck from the leash plug to a few inches forward of the fins and in the center of the board. Apply in a circular motion so that lumps of wax form to provide better traction.
